eLearning Blog

Published by suedowning under academic blogs, eLearning

While this blog has some vendor specific information, much of it could apply generically to other eLearning tools as well. And, it’s well written: The Rapid eLearning Blog from Articulate.

Using YouTube in the Democratic Process

Published by suedowning under political process, students

The president and vice president of College Democrats of America are superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention. They decided that they wanted to truly represent their constituents and that they would use YouTube to reach out to students and solicit their opinions.

Check out their initial video - requesting feedback - and their latest video posted today - with an endorsement for Senator Obama.

International Education

Published by suedowning under international education

The NAFSA Association of International Educators issued a Policy Brief “Next President Should Make International Education Policy Central to Meeting National Needs” which was sent along with a letter and other supporting materials to the 2008 presidential candidates. An excerpt I find applicable to many situations:

Let me be clear - all that I’ve described does not result from anyone doing anything intentionally wrong, but rather from people acting in the sincere belief that they are serving the national interest. Such incidents always happen in a policy vacuum, where there is no clear, authoritative articulation at the highest levels of where the national interest lies.

People on the ground, in almost any situation, need clear directives from their leaders in order to be effective.

Academic Blogging & Fair Use

Published by suedowning under academic blogs, fair use

The Chronicle of Higher Education today features an article in their The Wired Campus section about the academic use of a blog by professor and his students at Case Western Reserve University School of Law: A Class Blog Studies Fair Use.

“Of all the things I’ve tried, the blog has been the most successful in promoting discussion,” Mr. Friedman told the Chronicle. “It’s certainly especially suited to fair-use discussions, since we can post videos.”

The blog — What is Fair Use? — was used to supplement the “Legal Writing & Analysis” classes taught by Peter B. Friedman.

The Compressions of Time and Space

Published by suedowning under Uncategorized

I came across an article today—it was the image that caught my attention—on the University World News (”The global window on higher education”) website about a fresco discovered in 1977 in Vergina (north-east Greece) by Manolis Andronikos. Professor Andronikos dated the fresco, which decorated the façade of Philip II’s grave, to 336 BC when the Macedonian king Philip II was 46 years old and his eldest son, Alexander, was 20 years old.

The article, “Macedonian king’s conquests depicted in fresco,” dated April 20, 2008, is currently news as a presentation was recently made at an archaeological conference about this fresco which depicts a hunting expedition. Findings now identify the subjects as Philip II, Alexander, and other courtiers; the setting as the site of an ancient sun observatory in Thrace; and the subject matter as symbolic of a victorious Scythian expedition in 342 BC as well as representative of other matters of importance to Macedonia in general and Philip’s conquests in particular.

Taking all of this on faith, there are several observations about this item which fascinate me:

  • Six years elapsed between the Scythian expedition and the commissioning/creation/completion of the fresco. In today’s world the press, paparazzi, and citizen journalist bloggers can share news, images, and videos in an instant.
  • Alexander would have been approximately 14 years old as depicted—riding horseback, buck naked, doing battle. As the mother of four sons aged 8 to 23 years old—including a 20 year old awaiting imminent deployment to Iraq—I have an immediate emotional response to an image created about an event that happened over 2,000 years ago.
  • John Saridakis—a professor of astronomy—and Despina Ignatiadou—a doctor of astrology—made the identification. This did not happen three decades ago when the fresco was first discovered by an archaeologist.
  • This article was published by Makki Marseilles in Greece. I read it while sitting here in Boston, Massachusetts.
