Podcasting is Much Easier with Podcast Producer

We’ve been using Apple’s Podcast Producer to accommodate over 30 course sections per semester in creating a variety of podcasts which integrate into course curricula. Podcast Producer provides an easy-to-use, intuitive interface which allows the choice of screen-casting, video recording, audio recording, or file uploads.  The user chooses a type, and begins recording with a click of the button.  When finished, they click “publish” and presto, their work is finished.

The files is sent to Podcast Producer (which we currently run on an Xserve) where all of the processing, encoding, and publishing takes place. The podcast can be published to iTunes, blogs, YouTube, or any other file accessible system.

Our course podcasts are mainly published to iTunes U which is integrated with our Blackboard system.  The podcasts can then be delivered to only the students enrolled in the class.

For our public productions, Podcast Producer adds bumpers, intros and outros, metadata including cover art, and publishes in multiple formats. Look for more posts in the future on podcasting with Podcast Producer.

Top Five Things to Think About for a New iTunes U Site

picture-17.png

Today I discovered that Apple recently posted a document with the story behind the Stanford University iTunes U site with tips for schools new to iTunes U. Here’s an excerpt with things to keep in mind when starting your own site:

“Top Five Things to Think About When Starting Your Own iTunes U site:

1. Content, Content, Content

  • At a university, the most important thing is substance. So make sure you cast a really broad net that draws the best intellectual content to the site. The worst thing you can do is show yourself in a way that doesn’t represent the core values of your university.

2. Stay Focused

  • Start small. Don’t go into it thinking you have to change the communications landscape overnight. Just get a good, coherent, small program running. It’s better to start with a few great pieces than a lot of mediocre ones.

3. Get Support

  • Enlist the support of critical allies in the university system. They could be alumni; or staff from the president’s office, the chancellor’s office, or development; or any combination thereof. It’s important to leverage the success of your iTunes U site to build awareness and get the right people on board.

4. Staff Properly

Mobile Learning: The Vision

ACU is one of at least four pilot schools this year giving every incoming freshman a choice of either an iPhone or iPod Touch (see Reuters). The Mobile Learning section of ACU’s website includes great resources and inspiring visions for 21st Century Learning and is worth exploring.

Also, Apple has posted a QuickTime stream of the iPhone Roadmap March 6th Event which — about 2/3 of the way through — demos some pretty amazing applications and possibilities for the future.

We are looking forward to launching it officially and so far all the faculty and students we’ve talked to are excited as well! We will keep you posted on our progress and announce when CAS launches officially.
